  1. Hardware requirements for Muli Linux Accounting Software servers are not demanding.

If you are buying a new branded server (Dell, HP, Acer etc) then you can check if it is Ubuntu Certified HERE.

Alternatively if your IT provider is supplying a system built from components then their technical people can study the following notes and do their own due diligence to ensure compatibility with Linux drivers.

  1. Servers with Hardware RAID for the hard disks are recommended - but the most important issues is backup.

  2. There is a lot to be said for keeping everything simple, e.g. limit Raid to level 1 (simple mirroring), but replace Key server hardware at least every 4 years, (relegate old servers to less critical tasks).
  3. All Muli servers need to be (HVM) hardware virtual machine compatible, for example:

    1. AMD CPU's SVM (Secure Virtual Machine)
    2. Intel CPU's NT-x (Intel Virtualisation Technology)
You can verify a system by running: cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep “vmx|smx”

      See Compatible Processors at http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/HVM_Compatible_Processors
    3. Also see this informative Intel link for CPU models and features http://ark.intel.com/?iid=processors_body+resources_ark

  4. The major issue is considering the business risk associated with Backup and Time to achieve a Restore.

  5. All Servers should be running on a Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) - where possible opt for online with a double conversion type. Consider "Belt and Braces" Dual power supplies off different UPS.

Wide Area Network is established and managed by the client - not Muli

  6. Most Muli Clients' business are scattered over wide geographical areas, thus requiring the connection to the Internet/VPN to allow remote Users to establish a working session with a fixed IP address for the internet /VPN gateway.

The internet needs to be isolated utilising a Firewall device.

  7. Muli recommends that remote client User connections are established using ipsec VPN. This connection is also used to update Muli software and enable Muli online support.

Muli has traditionally used the (Snapgear) Secure Computing 'Cyberguard range of Firewall routers. Users should be aware that difficulties may be experienced in establishing IPSEC VPN using mixed brands.
