5502.5.3 Starting Linux Install

Instructions plus a PARTITION PLAN can be downloaded from the SUPPORT Tab.

  1. Insert Linux CD-ROM in drive (Ubuntu Server Edition LTS)
  2. Turn Power On
  3. Select English
  4. Select "Install Ubuntu"from Menu - and wait
  5. Choose Origin of Language = ENGLISH
  6. Choose Country = AUSTRALIA
  7. Detect Keyboard Layout = NO
  8. Select “keyboard Layout = USA”
  9. Configure the network
    - Make sure the network is connecting
    - choose Manual Configuration and use information from PARTITION PLAN (In Checklist)
  10. Configure Clock - Australia/Your State
  11. Partition Disk
    - Select Manual Partitioning Method
    - Select your disk from the list – use the cursor arrow keys to highlight the entry showing FREE SPACE under your disk.
    - Create a New partition
    - New Partition Size (enough for boot space – the available space will be larger) Use Partition Plan Data
    - Select Primary/Beginning
    - Mount Point = /boot
    - Use as Ext3
    - Select Done setting up the partition
  12. Configure the Logical Volume Manager
    - Select “Yes” - write the changes to disks and configure the LVM
    - Create Volume Group
    - Volume Group Name = vg1
    - Select “/dev/sda free” - N.B. press SPACE BAR to select
    - Select “Yes”
  13. Create Logical Volume
    - Logical Volume Name: = root (Use Partition Plan Data)
    - Logical Volume Name: = swap (same as your memory) e.g. 4G
    - Logical Volume Name: = var (Use Partition Plan Data)
    - Logical Volume Name: = tmp (Use Partition Plan Data)
    - Logical Volume Name: = virt (Use Partition Plan Data)
    - Logical Volume Name: = backup (Use Partition Plan Data)
    - Select “Finish”
  14. Select “backup” (highlight line with “#” shown)
    - users – change to Ext4
    - Mount Point – enter manually as “/backup”
    - Select “Done setting up the partition”
  15. Select “root” (i.e. line with “#”)
    - Use as Ext4
    - Mount point = “/”
    - Select “Done setting up the partition”
  16. Select “swap”
    - Use as Swap area
  17. Select “tmp”
    - use as Ext4
    - Mount point = “/tmp”
  18. Select “var”
    - use as Ext4
    - Mount point “/var”
  19. Select “virt”
    - Use as Ext4 - Mount point = “enter manually - /virt”
  20. Finish partitioning and write changes to disk.
    - Select “yes”
  21. USER ACCOUNT
    - Name = ubuntu
    - Account = ubuntu
    - Password = secret
    - Use weak password = Yes
    - Encrypt home folder = No
  22. Apt Management
    - Http proxy: keep blank, press Return
    - No Automatic updates
  23. Install Software
    - Select OpenSSH Server
  24. Install Grub
    - Select Yes
  25. Re-Boot system - remember to remove Install CD when requested
