MULI
HARDWARE NOTES Rev A
Muli utilise the Linux operating system for its Server and XWindows
display for Users' workstations.
-
As many computer hardware suppliers such as Compaq, Hewlett Packard, IBM,
Dell and other smaller manufacturers are selling server hardware pre-installed
with Linux, there is no need for Muli to provide the total solution but
simply instal the Muli application software on a prefigured machine.
-
Many computer industry professionals recommend the use of RAID solutions.
While in principle we cannot disagree, the cost benefit is dubious.
Muli believe the best protection is to upgrade the server every three
years - "double performance, same price ".
The old server can then be used as a workstation for the balance of
its useful life.
-
Muli will provide configuration procedures that should be implemented to
the setup of the hardware and operating system.
Muli Hardware
For cost, ease of installation, performance and ongoing support, Muli
make the following observations on hardware:-
[Total solution must be suitable for installing Linux - Redhat or
Turbolinux]
-
Quality Motherboard
-
CPU AMD (K3 or better) or Pentium III 800 or better (Muli believe the AMD
is better value)
-
RAM minimum 128 Meg (indicative say 90 + 12 for each additional User)
-
CD
-
Network card 10/100
-
17" Monitor (15" flat or 14.2" portable) 1024 x 768 resolution
-
Mouse & Keyboard
-
Modem (min 56K Hayes compatible KFlex) This is directly connected to the
2nd serial port of the CPU to allow Muli direct access for support. Beware
Voice & Message modems give problems. The Spirit Panther V90 external
modem is an economical solution.
We will recommend ADSL once it is economically available
-
For performance CPU, a SCSI II controller for the hard disk and tape backup
unit with a min. of 9GB for the operating system, Muli software and your
Muli data. If using SAMBA file services for your personal productivity,
then an 18 GB min. is recommended.
Tape Backup Unit
We generally utilise the Travan 4/8 for small systems and the 12/24
GB SCSI for larger systems.
UPS Power Regulation
We are increasingly aware of the effects of power fluctuations on systems
and inclusion of an UPS is recommended (mandatory with RAID). If you are
installing an UPS, it is worth connecting the UPS to the second serial
port and implementing automatic shutdown software.
Printers & Print Servers
a. Cheques should be printed on a 24-pin dot matrix push tractor feed
with Epson compatible emulation.
b. All Muli reports are A4 format. There is increasing use of colour
to enhance the presentation, including User defined letterheads.
Good value printers are:
-
Postscript colour laser - Kyocera FS 5800C
-
Postscript Black&White laser - Kyocera FS 800
Operating System Setup
Muli have a detailed Quality Procedure for setting up systems that
includes establishing a separate partition for using Muli data.
